This mapping project explores the process of discovery in a special collection.

Starting with one item – the Bob Damron Address Guide – we mapped gay-friendly bar locations in Los Angeles and then began a process of going through archival material at USC’s ONE Archives in order to identify potential collections and materials that could be associated with those bar locations.

The idea behind the project is to provide students and researchers a glimpse at the vast archival holdings available to them at the ONE Archive through the lens of one item. As items are associated with the various locations from the Damron guide a narrative of gay life in Los Angeles will emerge that is in part based on location. Unique and distinct collections and materials will be connected and a story will be told and retold through these items.
